One evening, after thinking it over for some time,
Harold decided to go for a walk in the moonlight.
There wasn't any moon,
and Harold needed a moon for a walk in the moonlight.
And he needed something to walk on.
He drew a moon.
And a path, straight and narrow,
for a walk in the moonlight.
And he set off on his walk,
taking his purple crayon with him.
The path led straight to where he thought
a forest ought to be—
so that he wouldn't get lost.
He drew a forest.
And he didn't get lost.
And the path became a very long and winding path.
So long that when Harold drew his hand
back to his pocket to get his crayon,
he fell into the water.
But he drew himself up out of the water.
And he drew a boat, to sail in the water.
He sailed right through the forest.
And past an ocean.
And up, up to dry land again.
He drew a hot air balloon
and floated up above everything.
He drifted higher and higher.
He could see his house below.
He let himself down,
right into his own backyard.
And Harold drew his bedroom window.
And climbed into bed,
and the purple crayon dropped from his hand
as he fell fast asleep.
