Overview
Shichahai — three linked lakes named Qianhai, Houhai, and Xihai, about 34 hectares of open water — is the only expanse of lake inside old Beijing's inner city. Princely mansions, temples, and hutong courtyards crowd its shores, and locals like to say that Shichahai existed before the city of Beijing itself.
In the Yuan dynasty these waters, then called Jishuitan, formed the northern terminus of the Grand Canal, thick with grain barges; as the canal silted up, the shores filled with princely residences such as Prince Gong's Mansion and, later, the homes of figures like Soong Ching-ling and Guo Moruo. Tiny Yinding Bridge frames a celebrated distant view of the Western Hills, while Yandai Xiejie lane preserves its Qing-era shopfronts. Summer brings lotus markets and boat lanterns, winter a beloved outdoor ice rink.
Take subway Line 8 to Shichahai or Line 6 to Beihai North. Start at Yinding Bridge toward dusk and circle the lakes in about two hours, adding Yandai Xiejie and the Drum Tower nearby. Pedicab hutong tours come with storytelling drivers — agree on the price before boarding. Check same-day notices for winter ice-rink hours and summer boat rentals.
