Overview
In Lujiazui, Pudong, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower rose between 1991 and 1994 to a height of 468 meters — then the tallest in Asia and third tallest in the world. Eleven spheres of varying size are strung along its shaft on three giant columns, evoking the poetic image of 'pearls large and small falling on a jade plate.' It remains the emblem of new Shanghai.
Conceived in the 1980s to improve broadcast coverage and crown the river's new skyline, the design by the East China Architectural Design Institute won a competitive selection; the tower opened to the public in May 1995 together with the Shanghai History Museum in its base. The main observation deck at 263 meters gives a 360-degree panorama; the glass-floored skywalk at 259 meters hangs sheer over the void; the Space Capsule tops out at 351 meters; and a revolving restaurant turns at 267 meters.
Walk from Lujiazui Station on subway Line 2 or 14. Ascend on a clear late afternoon to catch daylight, sunset, and the night view in one visit; online tickets bundle decks and the history museum — watch your time slot. The skywalk is breezy, and the circular footbridge below the tower is the best spot to photograph the Lujiazui 'big three.'
